MATCH INFO
Competition: 2022 League of Ireland Premier Division
Date: 7:45 p.m. June 17, 2022
Venue: The Brandywell
Referee: Alan Patchell
Attendance: Unknown
FULL TIME!
The referee blows up a few seconds early and boos around the Brandywell. Decent away point for Drogheda but Derry see their winless run continue.
Big shout for a Derry penalty as McGonigle goes down under a challenge from Evan Weir. To no avail though.
Only two minutes? Thought there would be more.
Its been a frustrating half for Derry as they have not worked McCabe too often. Drogheda had been second best but have grown in confidence. The likes of Adam Foley, Darragh Nugent and James Clarke have been really on form for the away side. You can tell that Derry were not a side in form and the nerves have told.
Shane McEleney, of all players, whips in a great ball. McGonigle is meets it but is only able to head it over under pressure.
PENALTY SCORED!
Dean Williams (Drogheda United) scores from the penalty spot.
It came from very sloppy play at the back from the home side. Adam Foley plays a decent ball into the box, Thomson does not get enough on his header and just before Ryan Brennan is able to get a touch on it, he gets a push in the back from the Derry City captain. Dean Williams steps up and slots it past Brian Maher.
Penalty to Drogheda!
James Akintunde wins the ball in midfield to lay it off to Joe Thomson. He attempts to float in a ball towards McGonigle. It is claimed fairly easily by McCabe though.
Yellow Card
Dane Massey takes another late challenge and the recent sub is the next Derry player into the book.
Its gone a bit quiet here in the second-half. Not a lot of action to cheer so far.
Substitution

Substitution
McGonigle looks to strike after turning inside his man. James Clarke throws himself in the way to deflect it wide.
Dean Williams finds himself bearing down on goal after beating the offside trap. He looks set to shoot only for Caoimhin Porter to cooly dispossess him. Well done to the young defender.
Patching is the first to have a shot in anger in this half. He shifts the ball onto his favoured foot before letting fly. It just drifts past the post.
SECOND HALF

Two minutes to be played here.
Furtive cries for handball as a Kavanagh shot strikes a Drogs defender in the box. Not much in it at all

GOAL!
Matty Smith (Derry City) scores.
Derry strike for the lead!
The value of persistence sees the home side go in front. Smith hares down the line and sends a ball over. It is too far but is taken up by Kavanagh who floats it back in. McGonigle heads it goalwards but McCabe manages to save it. It comes back out and Smith follows up to slot home.
Great persistance from Smith down the left flank as he chases down a seemingly lost cause. He wins the ball and sends a cross into the area, McGonigle leaves it and it falls to Will Patching. His volley is off target though.
A brief stoppage in play as Dane Massey is seeking treatment after a collision with Brian Maher
The home side have definitely started the brighter of the two so far.
Early opportunity for the home side as Brendan kavanagh plays a lovely ball through the Drogheda defence. Jamie McGonigle and Matty Smith are its target but the latter intercepts it first. His touch is too strong as he attempts to round Colin McCabe.
GAME ON!
Kick-off is almost upon us at The Brandywell.
