Galway were totally outclassed in the first half and were lucky to be only 2-0 down at half time. They possibly paid Rovers too much respect in the first half as they played much better in the second half, did not concede any more goals and indeed had a few decent chances to get at least one goal back.
However Galway will now go back and concentrate on the race for promotion back to the Premier Division while Rovers continue to progress on all all three fronts, League, Cup and Europa Conference League.
Thats it from the Tallaght Stadium , hope you enjoyed the updates from Patrick O' Connor.
3 mins added time
Shot on the run by Max Murphy but he skies it over the bar
5 mins left here and Rovers seemed content to play out the remainder of the game with a two goal advantage
Superb shot on the turn by Keating, forces Mannus into a top class save as he pushes it out for a corner, much better from Galway in the secind half
Great play by Place, he directs a great cross field pass to Higgins but his shot comes off the post, almost a goal against the run of play
A shot by Place is headed away for a rare Galway corner, Gary Boylan takes it but Rovers manage to clear it through sub Scales
Rovers reasserting their superiority again after Galway had put them under some pressure in the opening 15 mins of the second half.
A little bit better from Galway, they are pressing Rovers into their own half, some thing they were unable to do in the first half
Finally a shot on target for Galway, it comes from O'Dea and Mannus is forced to palm the ball away for a corner
Corner for Rovers, again as a result of good build up play on the left, this time it does not clear the first defender and Galway get it away
A lovely flowing move by Rovers down the left flank almost leads to a third goal, Towell arrives a bit late into the box and is overstretching as he strikes the ball , it hits the side netting , a let off for Galway
Unless there is a total transformation in Galway's performance in the second half, we are not looking at any shock result here in Tallaght tonight,
The home side are dominating possession , particularly in midfield, and Galway are certainly missing the infleunce of their tigerish midfielder Conor McCormack who is suspended.
Rovers are passing the ball around at will and one suspects they will empty the bench if they get a third goal early in the second half.
1 minute of added time
Corner for Rovers after a sustained passge of keep ball almost leads to another goal, this time the ball is hacked off the line by a Galway defender
Rovers probing on both wings and through the middle, Galway are resorting to hacked clearances at this stage , its a totally one sided affair as we approach half time
A long period of possesion by Rovers leads to a shot by Gary O' Neill but it fizzes wide
It looks like it will be a long night for the team from the west, Rovers in total control here
The second goal is almost a carbon copy of the first, Gannon whips the ball in from the endline on the right hand side and Watts is first to react and he fires the ball into the net past Kaerns
Towell nonchalantly spins the ball in behind the Galway defence from the right wing and all Gaffney has to do is guide it past Kearns for the opening goal - all to easy for the home side
Rovers have the bulk of the possesion and are beginning to open up the Galway defence
Lopes fouls Waweru, free to Galway outside the box, they get a header on target but Mannus easily saves
10 mins gone here , no pattern of play as yet and neither keeper has been tested
The tackles are flying in here, Murphy goes in hard on Towell this time and gets a stern warning from the referee
Alex Murphy fouls Graham Burke and gets an early yellow card, free kick to Rovers but it comes to nothing
There are 500 home fans at the match tonight, they have been unusually quite so far but i'm sure that will change as soon as referee Rob Hennessy gets the game started in 15 minutes.
Galway Utd show two changes in their line up from their 0-0 draw with Bray last weekend.
Conor McCormack is suspended and David Hurley is injured so Alex Murphy and Mikie Rowe both start.
The Rovers team news is in . Sean Kavanagh and Joey O'Brien start, Roberto Lopes captains the side and Rory Gaffney leads the line up front.
Ronan Finn, Liam Scales and Aaron Greene are on the bench
