MATCH INFO
Competition: 2022 League of Ireland Premier Division
Date: 7:45 p.m. June 24, 2022
Venue: The UCD Bowl
Referee: Unknown
Attendance: Unknown
That's it from Patrick O' Connor at the Belfield Bowl, hope you enjoyed the live updates.
Derry City claim all three points to get their title challenge back on course, they certainly deserve it on the basis of their second half performance.
It was far removed from their 7-1 win up in Brandywell in April but Ruadhri Higgins won't complain as , at a minimum, it has stopped the rot after a run of 7 games without a win.
UCD certainly missed Liam Kerrigan tonight and obviously have suffered without Colm Whelan for most of the season, they remain rooted to the bottom of the table without much light at the end of the tunnell.
FULL TIME!
Substitution
4 mins added time
Adam Verdon tries a shot from distance, it takes a deflection and goes for a corner which is cleared by Derry
Substitution
Corner to Derry, a chance to test the UCD defence but its cleared by the students
Substitution
The students attemp a few counter attacks but they seem a bit devoid of ideas in the final third and are not really threatening the Derry defence
Thompson tries a shot from distance but its no trouble to Moore
Derry weaving some good moves now, UCD are pretty much camped in their own half trying to prevent a second goal which would surely finish them off
Substitution
There is a bit more urgency about the game since that goal, Derry need that second goal badly while the students are striving for an equalsier that their effort just about deserves.
Substitution
Substitution
Substitution
Derry City have taken confidence from that goal and are beginning to create some good moves as they search for that insurance second goal
Substitution
McGonigle wrestles Keaney off the ball and tries to curl the ball into the top corner , its too high and goes wide
Matty Smyth was taken down by a UCD defender, refeeee Ray Matthews had no hesitation in awarding the free kick
PENALTY SCORED!
Penalty to Derry
Great chance for Kavanagh in the box but he delays his shot and its saved
SECOND HALF
A fairly even half overall, Derry City have had more of the possession but seem very one dimensional in their approach play, apart from a few half chance they have not looked like scoring so far, and their poor form in May and June seems to be continuing.
UCD have soaked up some pressure at the back but they do seem well capable of dealing with whatever Derry throw at them, and indeed look dangerous themselves on the break .
The fare overall is average at best, lets hope it improves in the second half.
HALF TIME
It is half-time between UCD and Derry City.
1 min added time
McGonigle almost atones for his yellow card, he gets the ball after a quick break and tries to curl it into the top tright hand corner, forcing Moore to palm the ball over the bar- the corner comes to nothing though.
Yellow Card
The game has become very scrappy, both sides guilty of giving the ball away cheaply, poor game so far
McEleney is back on , UCD have a free kick but its cleared and Derry City break quickly
Play is stopped , Shane McEleney goes down injured ,he is off the pitch receiving treatment, Derry down to 10 men for the moment
UCD break on the right side, a good move which ends with Sean Brennan flashing his shot over the bar, good chance for UCD
A good corner kick by Patching finds the head of Coll but his header flashes wide
Patrick McEleney is orchestrating most of Derry City's play, but there is very little movement up front with the result that the UCD defence have had it relatively easy so far.
Good break by UCD, instigated by Evan Osam and carried on by Sean Brennan but in the end the ball goes harmlessly wide
There is a distinct lack of atmosphere at the Bowl, fairly reflective of the fare on offer on the pitch which has been very poor so far
McGonigle comes in off the left wing and tries a shot but its a weak effort and goes wide
Caffrey fouls McGonigle in the centre circle, free to Derry City but they dont make any use of it.
First corner to Derry after a good interchange of play on right side forced UCD to concede a corner. The resultant free kick is cleared by the home defence
No great tempo to the game so far, both teams are still '' feeling out the opposition''
First shot on target comes from Dylan Duffy for UCD but Maher gathers it easily
Derry City with the bulk of the possession but they seem to be playing across the middle with little penetration so far
Free to UCD out on the left wing, the ball is cleared , Derry then launch a quick counter attack but McGonigle is offside
GAME ON!
15 minutes to kick off here, its a blustery evening in South Dublin , lets hope the rain holds off for the duration of the match
Thre is one change in the Derry City line up from last weekend's game agaist Drogheda Utd, Joe Thompson starts instead of the injured Cameron Dummigan.
UCD's teamsheet is issued and it shows Jack Heaney returning to the starting eleven from suspension while there is no place on the bench for Liam Kerrigan tonight.
Good evening and welcome to the Belfield Bowl for tonight's Premier Division clash between UCD and Derry City.
I'm Patrick O' Connor and I'll be bringing you live updates of tonights match
