Mahon delighted with creative St. Pat's

St. Patrick's Athletic's recorded their third home win of the season in Richmond Park on Monday evening, and their fourth in total, as they climbed up to sixth place in the Airtricity Premier Division table with a convincing 5-2 victory over strugglers Galway United at the Inchicore venue.

However, it wasn't all plain sailing for Pat's, as they had fallen 2-0 behind inside the opening twenty minutes before responding in some style. This is not the first time that The Saints have recovered from a two-goal deficit this season, and Pat's boss Pete Mahon believes that this shows the bottle and character that they possess.

“A mad start to the match, finding ourselves 2-0 down. Very poor defending I thought, but the positives were that we created chances before we even scored. I thought we could have had one or two goals. We came back well, to come from two goals down, we've done it already this year against Dundalk, there's a bit of bottle in the team, a bit of character. Then to get five goals in the end, and I thought we could have gotten three or four more” Mahon stated.

In general, Mahon was quite happy with the way that his side played on the night, though he was particularly pleased with the way front duo Daryl Kavanagh and Danny North played. He believes that their good combination play could see them further increasing their overall scoring rate.

“The boys up front look very sharp I think, a good combination. They work well together. As I said, we have created a lot of chances, and in fairness in all the games we've played this year, we've created chances. Problem is we're not scoring more goals. I know we've gotten eight in the last two games, but before those games we had chances here against Bohs, against UCD we had five chances. So maybe it's coming right for us now. They are two important wins, keeps us away from the bottom end of the table”.

With their current good form, it would appear that the Pat's players are really enjoying their football, which Mahon believes comes from winning matches, though he also feels that they approach defeats in the right frame of mind as well, which makes it a very a enjoyable club for the former UCD supremo to work for.

“That's from getting a few positive results. In fairness, we have a good group here, who are working hard. We're doing the best we can. It's not what it was here a couple of years back, it's a lot more hands on now”.

“There's a lot more to be done because there is less bodies here. So we're doing the best that we can in the situation. I like it here, it's a good job. It is a happy camp, but when we're getting beaten here and dropping points we're not too down-heartened either. It is difficult at times to win a game. As I said, if we get our best team on the pitch, which we haven't done so far this season, I think we'll be okay,” Mahon added.
