Shamrock Rovers' appeal against the 36th minute dismissal of Richie Towell during last Friday's game against Cork City has been rejetced by the independent Appeal Committee of the FAI.

The incident that led to Towell's sending off occurred off the ball, following a Cork City corner-kick.

Towell and Gordon Walker ended up on the ground, which led the referee, after consultation with his assistant, to issue a straight red card to Towell.

With the dismissal of the appeal, Towell is now set to serve a three-match suspension.

In a match that saw two more players from Shamrock Rovers, Johnny Kenny and Sean Hoare, being sent off, the Hoops were left with just eight players on the field.

Cork City capitalised on this situation, taking all three points with an 84th minute goal from Ruairi Keating.
