Premier Division round-up: Derry City go top after Shamrock Rovers fall to loss against Drogheda

Derry City moved a point clear at the top of the table thanks to a commanding 4-1 win over UCD at the Ryan McBride Brandywell Stadium.

The Candystripes made the most of Shamrock Rovers’ 2-1 defeat at home to Drogheda by easily seeing off the Students at home.

Jordan McEneff opened the scoring for Ruaidhri Higgins’ men early on – but they had to wait until the second period to flex their muscle.

A brace from Michael Duffy put Derry on their way to an easy win, with the former Dundalk winger finding the goal in the 50th and 64th minute.

Adam Wells scored a consolation for Andy Myler’s side in the 76th minute, with Matthew Ward putting the gloss on a 4-1 victory late on.

But the main story of the night came at Tallaght Stadium as Shamrock Rovers saw their unbeaten run come to an end against Drogheda.

Kevin Doherty’s men raced into a 2-0 lead before Rovers scored through Rory Gaffney in the 79th minute to set up a grandstand finish.

But Freddie Draper and Dayle Rooney’s strikes were enough to see the Boynesiders over the line at the Dublin 24 venue.

Bohemians however fought back from 2-0 down to draw with Dundalk at Oriel Park.

Patrick Hoban and an own-goal from James Talbot gave the Lilywhites a strong lead before the Gypsies hit back in the second half.

Krystian Nowak halved the deficit for Declan Devine’s men after nodding home Jordan Flores' corner-kick.

Ali Coote’s free-kick then found the net in the 89th to claim a late point for the Dublin 7 side.

And at Tolka Park, St Patrick’s Athletic recorded their third win in four games to see off Shelbourne.

Sam Curtis’ goal proved to be the difference for the two teams as Jon Daly’s case to become permanent boss at Richmond Park became even stronger.

Meanwhile, Cork City ended their six-game losing streak to defeat Sligo Rovers 1-0 at Turner’s Cross.

Ruairi Keating scored for the Leesiders as John Russell’s side lost their third match on the spin.
