LOI transfer wrap: Drogheda fend off interest to keep Darragh Markey

Drogheda United have retained the services of midfielder Darragh Markey – despite interest from elsewhere.

Previous reports linked Markey with a move to Bohemians, but he has signed on the dotted line for another campaign at Head In The Game Park.

The former St Patrick’s Athletic youngster joins Gary Deegan who has also committed to the 2023 campaign on the banks of the Boyne.

“I’m delighted to be back with the Drogs for the new season,” Markey said. “The management, staff, and the fans make me feel wanted here and that is massive to me.

“It has led to me having some of the most enjoyable football of my career and for that reason I can’t wait to be back next season.”

Sligo Rovers have also confirmed the contract extension of winger Will Fitzgerald.

Fitzgerald, previously of Derry City, has committed to yet another campaign at the Showgrounds despite serious interest in his services.

He joins Richard Brush in penning a new deal at the club.

“There was a lot of interest in Will so, we’re delighted he sees his future at Sligo Rovers,” boss John Russell said.

“I feel next season will be a big year for him, myself and all the staff are looking forward to working with him again.”

In the First Division, Galway United have landed Treaty United star Callum McNamara for the season ahead.

McNamara joins forward Francely Lomboto in committing to John Caulfield’s charges for the 2023 season.

However, the Tribesmen have lost Max Hemmings – with the defender departing the club after a short stint at Eamonn Deacy Park.

Elsewhere, Longford Town have made their first few signings of the season.

Jack Brady returns to the club after spells away at Limerick FC, Shelbourne and most recently Treaty United.

“I’m absolutely delighted to be back at the club,” Brady said.

“It’s a place full of great people who were really good to me when I was breaking through as a young player and that really helped me develop.

“Hopefully, we can have a good year and help get the club back where they belong. I’m very excited to get going.”

The shot-stopper joins Stephen Henderson’s side with youngsters Kyle O’Connor and Jamal Ibrahim – both of whom were previously at Shelbourne.

Cobh Ramblers have also revealed the departure of defender Charlie Fleming, with the ex-Treaty United defender moving to Australia.
