Galway United have announced the signing of former Finn Harps defender mark Russell as the Tribesmen look to bolster their squad for the second half of the season.

The Scotsman returns to the League of Ireland having most recently played for Scottish Championship side Greenock Morton in the Scottish Championship.

“I’m delighted to be on board as soon as John got in contact with me I was wanting to get over and after couple of days I knew this is where I wanted to play my football, the facilities are class and it’s a massive club which is a bonus for me can’t wait to get playing,” Russell said, speaking to the club’s media team.

The 26 year old brings a great deal of experience to John Caulfield’s side as they prepare for a tough promotion battle with Cork City and Waterford coming into the second half of the season.

Russell made over 100 appearances for Greenock Morton and also featured for Falkirk in the Scottish second tier. He also played 52 times for Ollie Horgan at Finn Harps between 2019 and 2021.

This could be a key signing for the Tribesmen as they prepare for life without Alex Murphy, the teenager is due to depart the club for Newcastle United in the coming days with the Annaghdown man expected to play his final game for the club on Friday night against Cobh Ramblers.
