It is not an understatement to say that football is something that unifies Europe. Whether you bet on football at Lottoland or root for your favourite club out of raw devotion, everyone on the European continent and the British Isles gets a kick out of football. But sometimes, things get serious. We aren’t talking about the occasional riots. We are talking about the sobering, emotional, and thrilling result of Ukraine VS Scotland—and what the game may mean in the grander scheme.

About The Match (and Result)

On June 1st, 2022, the Ukraine national team had its first match since November 2021. The qualifier match for the World Cup was originally scheduled for March 1st. The team could not practice in their home country; instead, they had been training in Slovenia since May. Fans on YouTube were keen to note that Ukraine had boatloads of talent and, because of their country’s war-torn state, motivation.

Despite the war going on in Ukraine, Scottish players did not hold back. They had the edge multiple times during the match. Ukraine took an early lead and ultimately secured three wins. By the end of the match, the Ukrainian team was too exhausted to celebrate.

Ukraine beat Scotland 3–1. But the implications beyond the football pitch are loaded.

Making an Impression

After all that the Ukraine team went through to prepare for this game, football fans had every right to be excited. Ukrainians that had immigrated to Europe showed their blue and yellow as they piled into the seats. Every player on the national team wore the Ukrainian flag as they stood for their national anthem.

But fans of the Scottish team also showed support for Ukraine. According to CNN, people dressed in Scottish tartans sported blue and yellow socks, ribbons, and half-and-half scarves—an unusual sight for passionate fans. And even though there is no instrument as Scottish as the bagpipe, one could argue that the pipes, sometimes a symbol of rebellion, played for the valiant Ukrainians as well. Both football associations made sure that everybody would have the lyrics to the Ukrainian national anthem available so that they could sing together.

FIFA itself also took a stance. Even if you know what goes on behind closed doors at FIFA, they made it clear that they did not support the Russian invasion. Russia was banned from competing in the World Cup. Don’t mess with the people who manage Europe’s favorite sport!

The Coach’s Words

FIFA’s anti-war stance was nothing compared to the pointed, poignant words of the Ukraine team’s coach. Rather than trying to paraphrase what coach Oleksandr Petrakov said, we will quote his words from this video:

“We played for those who fight in trenches, those who fight with their last drop of blood. We also played for Ukrainians, for people back home who suffer every day. Yes, we did a baby step towards our great aim but we still have the Wales game in front of us. We’ll do everything in Wales that people expect us to do, and we will make Ukrainians proud to be Ukrainians.”

The World Cup is not just about football—it’s about national representation. And nobody knew that better than the coach.

Conclusion

We understand that many people use entertainment, including sports like football, to escape from the less pleasant parts of reality. But sometimes, there is no escape. With a war happening in their home country, the Ukraine national team is more determined than ever to reach the World Cup. No matter what club you usually favour, you have to admire the Ukraine team’s passion and motivation. If you are a fan of Irish football, Ireland is scheduled to play Ukraine in a couple of days in the Nations League. And it’s fine if you wear blue and yellow socks.
