Liam Buckley applauds new signings as Sligo Rovers remain unbeaten

Sean O’Connor reports from Head in the Game Park

Two first half headers by Lewis Banks and Jordan Hamilton before a screamer from Will Fitzgerald secured three points for Sligo Rovers on Friday night.

The Bit O’Red remain unbeaten in the league, taking eight points from their opening fur games. After making five changes to his side last night, Liam Buckley will be very pleased with the display, especially in the opening 45 minutes.

Buckley spoke to extratime.com after the game, and although Drogheda enjoyed more possession in the second half, the contest was over in truth.

“I thought the first half was good,” Buckley said.

“We linked up quite well, but in the second half we took our foot off the pedal and saw it out. That’s disappointing from my point of view but nonetheless it is a very good 3 points. The third goal was tremendous.”

Reflecting on his new signings, Buckley praised the impact Fitzgerald, Hamilton and Max Mata have made in recent weeks, all of whom could have won man of the match on Friday night.

“They have done well coming into the team. We’ve got a good squad and its great to have that around because you won’t play the same team every week.

“I’m delighted we’re unbeaten and have three clean sheets. You saw in patches in the first have how well we can play. We have to replicate that more often. Hopefully, we’ll get better as the season goes on.

With a home game against struggling Finn Harps on Monday night, Buckley hinted at more changes to his squad, as they seek to extend their unbeaten run.

“It’s a quick turnaround and it’s all about recovery for the boys. We’ve got a good group of players here that I can select from so I’ll see if we need to change around for Monday.”
