League Report: Wexford 1 - 5 Treaty United

Treaty United recorded a comprehensive 5-1 away win over Wexford on Friday night in the SSE Airtricity League First Division as the visitors got their season off to a perfect start.

The Limerick side came up just short in the play-offs last season but a display like this will give them great heart for the campaign ahead.

In contrast, it was another disastrous encounter for the Wexford. Still in the game at half-time, they failed to take advantage of the chances that fell their way and were guilty at the back of lacklustre defending.

Wexford gave a start to a number of their new faces. Aidan Friel, Aaron Dobbs and Dinny Corcoran all came into the side. Luka Lovic and Joe Manley were unable to shake off injuries suffered during pre-season.

Treaty introduced new signings Enda Curran, Jack Brady, and Joe Gorman to the team.  Stephen Christopher was absent due to a suspension carried over from last season.

The home started brightly with Corcoran and Lorcan Fitzgerald causing problems up front in the early stages. The latter headed wide from an early free-kick while the experienced Corcoran saw two opportunities blocked moments later.

Thomas Considine and Aaron Dobbs were providing decent support and the Treaty midfield were having issues with their movement.

Treaty went ahead against the run of play. Charlie Fleming was allowed get to the line to put a cross over. Joel Coustrain flicked it on for Callum McNamara to slot home.

They almost scored again minutes later. Enda Curran found himself in space but Mitchell Byrne was able to recover and block the chance.

Treaty doubled their lead moments later. They won a free-kick outside the area which Paul Hunt fumbled. Coustrain was at hand to bundle the ball home.

The home side had a chance when Corcoran flicked the ball towards Conor Davis but he was crowded out by the Treaty defence.

Davis was to get his name on the scoresheet and in bizarre fashion. His corner was floated in from the left and went straight into the net. The considerable wind providing an assist on this occasion.

The home side were buoyed by this as the second half begun. Dobbs embarked on a weaving run into the area before laying it off to Friel. He was only able to blast over from an angle.

Treaty extended their lead from the penalty spot soon after. Lee Devitt swapped passes before going down in the area. Curran stepped up to confidently beat Hunt from the spot.

The Galway native got his second from close range after Adam Wells was robbed in midfield. Coustrain and Fleming exchanged passes before firing a low cross into the area. Curran evaded his marker and tapped home.

The scoring continued as substitute Joe Gorman was unmarked to flick a header past Hunt from a set-piece on the left. The spirit had long departed from the Wexford players as Treaty emptied their bench.

Their misery was exemplified as a both Corcoran and Dobbs were unable to test Brady when presented with good chances.

A harsh lesson for the home side. They will hope to get their injured players back in time before playing away to Cobh next Saturday. Treaty will aim to continue in this kind of form at home to Athlone Town next Friday.
