Republic of Ireland defender Louise Quinn hailed her team’s “disciplined” performance in the 2-1 win over Poland in La Manga on Wednesday.

The victory earned thanks to goals from the Birmingham City Quinn duo – Lucy Quinn and Louise Quinn – was the perfect start for the girls in green at the Pinatar Cup. Ireland will play again on Saturday against either Russia or Hungary and if they win that match they’ll have a shot at claiming the Pinatar Cup in their final game early next week.

“I thought we had a really disciplined performance and were really in control of the game,” said Quinn speaking with the FAI media team after the come-from-behind win. “I thought we were really good and controlled in possession. We knew when to play and do what we are good at, trying to break through the lines and down the flanks.”

Ireland went a goal down in the 50th minute to a penalty described by Quinn as “harsh” before equalising two minutes later through Lucy Quinn.

“It was a super goal from Lucy off what is supposedly her weaker left foot and she smashed it into the back of the net. Goals like that give you confidence.”

The winner came from Louise Quinn’s 13th international goal as she headed home a Katie McCabe cross.  “The momentum was going our way. It was from our own set piece off a second or third phase.”

Ireland captain McCabe gave up the armband for this fixture to allow Niamh Fahey skipper the side on her landmark 100th international appearance for Ireland.

Fahey became just the tenth Ireland player (and the fourth Irish women) to reach the century milestone of appearances.

“With it being Niamh Fahey's 100th cap, the occasion meant a lot to us because of the type of person that Niamh is.

“Every game is extremely important for our development, confidence and for us to push on with World Cup qualification," said Quinn who was making her 92nd international appearance.

"This is a competition (Pinatar Cup) that we can go on and win.

"We went into this game with no fear. We tried a few new things. We played with freedom and you could see that in the game.”
