Northern Ireland international Tom Flanagan made a deadline day switch from Sunderland to fellow League One side Shrewsbury Town on a two-and-a-half-year deal.

The defender was in the final six months of his contract on Wearside and has joined the Shrews on a permanent basis signing a two-and-a-half year deal at the New Meadow.

Flanagan moved to the Stadium of Light in 2018 and represented the club on 115 occasions and won the EFL Trophy at Wembley against Tranmere Rovers.
The 30-year-old has played 25 games in Sky Bet League One for the Black Cats so far this season, scoring one goal and assisting another from centre-back.

Flanagan has been capped eight times by his country since 2017 ,most recently in September.

The experienced defender spent two seasons in the Championship with Burton before moving to the Black Cats.

The arrival of Danny Batth from Stoke City earlier in the window looked set to limit the 30-year-old's game time on Wearsid

On leaving the club Kristjaan Speakman said: “Tom has played his part this season to ensure we head into the remainder of the campaign competing at the top end of the division, but his contract expires in the summer and this move represents a great opportunity for him to secure his long-term future. He has led by example throughout his time at the club and we wish him well in the next chapter of his career.”

Shrewsbury currently sit 16th in the table, four points above the relegation places.
