Waterford FC have signed midfielder Roland Idowu ahead of the new League of Ireland season.

Idowu comes with Premier Division experience, having spent the second half of last year on loan at Bohemians, where he made six appearances for the Gypsies.

The Dubliner began his career with St Kevin's Boys before joining Southampton in 2018. He spent two years with the Saints and had a short spell at Cardiff City, before returning to Ireland last August.

The 20-year-old is a Republic of Ireland underage international and represented his country at the 2019 UEFA under-17 European Championships.

Speaking to the club's media, Idowu said, “I’m very happy to be here. I know a lot about the club and know some of the players and I’m looking forward to getting going.

“Training has been really sharp, the players are really working hard and the setup is fantastic. I’ve settled in well and everyone has been great.

“Confidence is high going into the season now, everyone is happy and I’m really excited to get back on the pitch. I’ve heard how great the fans are and even playing against Waterford last season I could hear the noise so I can’t wait to play in front of them.”

Manager Ian Morris expressed his delight with the deal and spoke about the interest the player had from other clubs. "Roland is a fantastic player for us to have in. He’s physically strong, quick and can finish off both feet. The competition for places is really strong.

“We fought off competition from other clubs at home and across the water to have Roland here. He wants to be here, and that’s testament to the environment the staff and players have created.”
