Brewerymen too strong for Bohemian craft

Dateline 31 October, 1921

The return of fine weather and a top of the table clash saw a record crowd for the new League of Ireland, paying gate receipts of £170, at Dalymount Park on Saturday. Visitors St James’s Gate had been imperious throughout this season while Bohemians had only slipped up against fellow-Northsiders Frankfort.

As expected, the Brewerymen were victorious, with the only surprise of the day being the quality of the Gypsies’ display. Playing with ten men for all but the opening minutes, thanks to injuries, Bohs missed the craft of Otto and Marken in particular.

Indeed. it was these two who combined for their equaliser at the start of the second-half. Unfortunately for the Phibsborough men, no sooner had their first casualty, Haine, resumed but Marken and then Otto had to retire.

Many have questioned the actions of the Belfast-based referee, Mr Mulherrin, with the feeling being that perhaps the Gate might have found their numbers reduced by at least one dismissal. It seems that the northerner was reluctant to take action due to the extraordinary circumstances currently prevailing in the association game in this country.

In the main, St James’s Gate owed their victory to their own vigorous and battling methods, although they were helped by the home-teams winger, Murray, who repeatedly insisted on cutting inside and shooting instead of heading for the by-line and squaring the ball to the forwards and halves arriving late into the box. No-one who has witnessed the displays of the great Louis Bookman for Shels and Ireland can be in any doubt of the efficacy of this tactic once it is executed correctly.

Elsewhere, Jacobs were the only home team to win in the League of Ireland. The Biscuitmakers defeated Frankfort 4-1 at Rutland Avenue. YMCA were defeated 2-0 by fellow cellar-dwellers Olympia at Claremont Avenue while Shelbourne lost by the odd goal in five to Dublin United.

Shamrock Rovers continued their dominance of the Leinster Senior League with a 2-1 victory over Midland Athletic in the opening game at the Stripes’ new ground in Windy Arbour. Bohemians B drew 1-1 away to Bray Unknowns in front of another substantial crowd while Shelbourne United defeated CYMS 4-0.
