Waterford FC and Treaty United will compete in the 2021/22 Munster Senior Cup, the Munster Football Association have announced.

The League of Ireland teams were confirmed as participants following the draw for this season’s preliminary round.

The tournament features teams from the Munster Senior League and League of Ireland competing for one of the oldest titles in Irish football.

The pair will link up with competition mainstays Cork City and Cobh Ramblers in the quarter finals, which will take place in the new year.

Waterford were regulars in the tournament but they did not participate in the 2019 or 2020 editions of the competition.

Their last adventure in the competition was in 2018, and Cork City beat them 3-0 that year in the semi-finals.

This will be Treaty’s first time playing in the tournament as they were founded in 2020. They will be hoping to follow in the path of other successful teams from Limerick in the competition such as Limerick FC, who last lifted the trophy in 2015.

The competition, which did not take place during the 2020/21 season, kicked off on Thursday night with defending champions Rockmount beating Ringmahon Rangers 2-0 in the preliminary round.
