UCD boss Andy Myler admits that he was pleased with the ability of his side to score four goals without the unavailable Colm Whelan on Friday night against Bray Wanderers.

The Students racked up an impressive 4-3 win over the Seagulls, although they did make it a little bit harder than it should have been late on.

But without the unavailable Whelan who was on international duty with the Ireland under-21s, Myler said he was pleased that his side rose to the challenge without his key marksman.

“Overall I’m delighted with the performance,” he said after the game. “We had chances to go even more than 4-0 up.

“Sometimes we tell the boys that we learn when we win or lose and I think tonight we learned when we won. I’m just delighted with the win.

He added: “We always have a goal in us. it’s the way we try and play, getting players forward and into the box. It’s a really pleasing night.

“You always get asked can you do it without Colm Whelan and we scored four goals tonight.

“We have players who can effect the game inside the box. We created chances throughout the game so it is pleasing overall.”

Next up for the Students is a home clash against local rivals Cabinteely, and they will have a number of their key players back.

Whelan returns from international duty, while Lorcan Healy and Jack Keaney are also expected to return alongside the suspended Evan Weir.

With that in mind, Myler is still wary of the challenge posed by their South Dublin rivals.

“Cabinteely pushed us all the way last time and they will do the same again,” he explained.

“We’ll need to keep going as we are because they will have their own reasons to keep playing and getting results.

“We need to keep looking after own results and keep pushing on and pushing on between now and the end of the season.”
