Premier Division Round-Up: Drogheda stun Dundalk at Oriel, Harps win at home while Sligo’s woes continue

Tim Clancy’s Drogheda secured a derby day win over Dundalk on Friday night to pile on the misery for the Lilywhites at Oriel Park in the pick of this weekend’s Premier Division action.

A Mark Doyle brace set the Boynesiders on their way to a famous win, despite the best efforts from Michael Duffy to earn Vinny Perth’s side a point.

The result sees Dundalk drop into 9th position, inside the relegation playoff spot.

And Sligo Rovers’ woes continued as they fell to a 2-1 defeat at home to Derry City at the Showgrounds.

Joe Thomson gave the Candystripes a first-lead before they were pegged back before the interval thanks to a Johnny Kenny strike.

But Ronan Boyce was on hand to seal the three points for Derry late on, netting an 86th minute winner.

Tunde Owolabi continued his good form with a hat-trick in Finn Harps’ 3-1 win over St Patrick’s Athletic.

Owolabi opened the scoring before the Saints levelled thanks to a Chris Forrester penalty.

But Owolabi and Harps would score twice more to ensure a big win in their survival push.

Elsewhere, Longford Town’s stay in the Premier Division is all but over thanks to a heavy 4-1 defeat to Waterford.

Two braces from Cian Kavanagh and John Martin saw the Blues run out easy winners, with Dean Williams’ equaliser in the early stages of the second-half proving to be no more than a scant consolation.

Longford are now 16 points behind 9th placed Dundalk with 11 games remaining.
