Dora Gorman: 'A difference this year is that any of the teams seem capable of taking points off each other'
Paul Corcoran reports from Eamonn Deacy Park
It was a good weekend for Peamount United in their bid to be crowned Women’s National League Champions for the third season in a row.
On Saturday afternoon they ran out 3-0 winners over Galway at Eamonn Deacy Park, and that evening second place Shelbourne were beaten by Wexford Youths to leave Peamount three points clear at the top of the table.
Dora Gorman spoke to extratime.com after Saturday’s game and the Republic of Ireland international is pleased with their current run of form with their Champions League game against ZFK Spartak in their sights.
“It’s fantastic, Galway are always a really tough side. Whenever we play them it’s a battle over the last few years so we’re delighted to get out with the three points,” Gorman said.
“After we had the last minute loss against Shelbourne a few weeks back we’ve gotten a good few results together and it’s gotten our confidence back, so we’re happy out going into the Champions League now.
“We were kind of just focused on each game as it came in the League and getting that done first.
“Now that this game is over we can focus on getting over and getting our first game over. We’re playing over in the Netherlands, we’re playing a Serbian team first.
“We’ve kind of been focussing on these League games so now we get to actually think about it and start preparing for that.”
United have suffered just one loss this season but even at this point of the season Wexford Youths and Shelbourne are right behind them and making strong challenges for this year’s WNL title.
“It’s a very exciting League this year and ourselves, Shelbourne and Wexford are right up there at the top.
“A difference this year is that any of the teams seem capable of taking points off each other. We just saw Bohs lose in the last minute against Shels, we got a goal late on against DLR and our game against Athlone was very tight.
“Galway have had a couple of very close games against the top teams too. I think that adds an extra layer, in years gone by there would have been weaker teams that most teams would have been comfortable enough against but now every game is a battle so it’s really made it exciting going into the last round of games now.”
The Galway native had a hand in her side’s third goal on Saturday when she played a through ball to Aine O’Gorman in the box and Gorman is excited about the final third of the season with a number of big games ahead of Peamount in the coming weeks.
“I’m always happy to have involvement in some of the goals. Playing more as a defensive midfielder you’re kind of doing more of the grafting but it’s nice to get involved further up the field so I was happy with that,” Gorman explained.
“We have two big games, our first game back after the Champions League is against Wexford and then we have Shels coming soon after that.
“We’ll look forward to the next week away with the Champions League and then it will be back to work over here.
“It’s exciting, it’s great to get a good full League. Last year was great too and it was great to be able to play with Covid but it’s good to get the three rounds in and it really makes it exciting and there’s more ups and downs, teams aren’t getting away from anyone.”
