WNL Round-Up: Shels, Peamount United and Wexford Youths all win as DLR Waves draw with Athlone Town

There were wins for each of the top three teams in the Women's National League on Saturday with DLR Waves losing a bit of ground in the title race with a draw against Athlone Town.

Shelbourne continued their unbeaten run with another victory on Saturday when they defeated Galway 2-1 at Eamonn Deacy Park.

The Reds are now unbeaten in eleven as they continue their title challenge this season.

Keeva Keenan opened the scoring with an excellent long range effort in the first half, it looked like Galway might get a point from the game when Lynsey McKey netted from distance for the home side midway through the second half.

Galway’s hopes for a draw were short-lived however with Jessica Ziu scoring just a minute after the Tribeswomen’s equaliser to take the three points back to Dublin.

Peamount United secured their fourth win in a row on their trip to Turners Cross with a 5-0 win over Cork City.

Dearbhaile Beirne and Stephanie Roche opened the scoring for United in the first half. James O’Callaghan’s side would extend their lead with three more goals in the second half with Sadhbh Doyle scoring twice and Roche adding a fifth goal just before the final whistle.

Wexford Youths kept up the pressure on Shelbourne and Peamount United with another win on Saturday, with the side claiming a narrow 1-0 win over Bohemians on Saturday.



Youths are now unbeaten in 14 games and they have a 34th minute Kylie Murphy goal to thank for their latest victory in the Women’s National League.

DLR Waves lost ground on the top three in their game on Saturday afternoon with Athlone Town managing to hold the Dublin side to a 1-1 draw at the UCD Bowl.

Jetta Berrill scored in the 16th minute to give Graham Kelly’s side the lead but Kellie Brennan scored from the penalty spot in the 71st minute.

The result leaves the Dublin side eleven points off the top of the table after this weekend’s action.
