Former Longford Town midfielder Gaius Makouta joins Portuguese top-flight side Boavista

Former Longford Town midfielder Gaius Makouta has joined Portuguese top-flight Boavista ahead of the start of their new season.

The 24-year-old joins the Portuguese side following stints in Bulgaria and Greece with Aris and Beroe.

He has also played in Portugal before with Braga B and Sporting Covilha prior to making his move to Boavista.

Makouta played for Longford Town during the 2016 under Tony Cousins and Alan Mathews as Longford Town suffered relegation to the First Division.

Gaius played for Le Harve's youth academy before leaving them in June 2015 to join US Crétil-Lusitanos' under-19 squad.

He stayed with them for a season before making his move to the League of Ireland to join Longford Town in July 2016.

He made his league debut away to Shamrock Rovers on 5 August 2016 and made 7 league appearances as Longford finished bottom of the Premier Division.

Born in France, Makouta is of Congolese descent and has played for the Congo’s national team on five occasions since 2019, scoring once.

While playing in the League of Ireland with Longford Town, the midfielder’s game time was limited, starting just one league game and making six appearances off the bench.

It has been a similar case for him since then, playing with four clubs before finding a new home in Boavista.

Boavista finished 13th out of 18 teams in the Potuguese top-flight last season, and play out of the 28,263 capacity Estadio do Bessa stadium.

They are managed by Joao Pedro Sousa, formerly an assistant to Marco Silva at Premier League club’s Everton and Watford.
