Ex-Liverpool star Glen McAuley makes Athlone switch

First Division Athlone Town have confirmed the signing of forward Glen McAuley from Shelbourne.

McAuley joins Athlone after previous stints at St Patrick’s Athletic, Bohemians and Shelbourne in recent seasons.

The 21-year-old was previously on the books of Liverpool in the UK before returning home during the 2019 season to join the Saints under then boss Harry Kenny.

He enjoyed a quick start to life at Richmond Park before departing the club to join Northside rivals Bohemians ahead of the 2020 season.

He, however, found gametime hard to come by at Dalymount Park, and that eventually led to his departure from the club at the end of the season.

He would then join Shelbourne, but he would again struggle for minutes as the Reds raced clear at the top of the First Division table.

He joins Athlone who are just outside the playoff positions and will link up with an already impressive frontline at the club.

McAuley is not Athlone’s sole new recruit, former Limerick FC keeper Tommy Holland has also joined the Co. Westmeath side until the end of the season.

Holland will provide cover for Michael Schlingermann and Kayleum Rice between now and the end of the season.
