CORK CITY

The Rebels will be looking to add to their win column for the season when Athlone Town visit Turners Cross on Saturday afternoon in the Women’s National League (kick-off 2pm).

Paul Farrell’s side finally got their first taste of victory two weeks ago when they secured a narrow 1-0 win over Bohemians.

It had been a tough season up to that point for the club and they still find themselves joint bottom of the WNL table on points at this stage of the season.

A late winner by DLR Waves’ Ciara Maher meant that Cork lost their most recent game in the WNL but with the impressive Dublin side being held until the 88th minute they can take some confidence coming into this weekend’s fixture.

With the first win under their belts they will know what it takes to get over the line and secure three points although Athlone Town are certainly no pushovers as they found out when they played out a 2-2 draw away from home earlier in the season.

The Rebels took the lead twice on the day with Becky Cassin and Christina Dring finding the net but Emma Donohoe and Melissa O’Kane were on hand to ensure the points were shared.

ATHLONE TOWN

The Town have put in several impressive performances across the season so far and et they find themselves with just one win to their name at this point.

Tommy Hewitt’s side only have one point from their last four games with the side drawing 2-2 with Treaty United two weeks ago to add to their tally for the season.

It looked like the might push on from their dramatic 4-3 win over Galway in May but that hasn’t been the case for the midlands side unfortunately and they will be looking to add another win sooner rather than later.

Athlone sit bottom of the table, equal on points with their opponents for the weekend, although with a poorer goal difference which means they officially occupy ninth currently.

A win on Saturday would lift them off the bottom could see them move into sixth place however, depending on how results go elsewhere this weekend.

MATCH STATS

If either side wins this fixture they will move off the bottom of the table outright.

This will be the third ever meeting between the sides, Cork City won their first meeting in 2020 and the sides drew 2-2 earlier this year.

Cork City have scored the least amount of goals so far this season with 13 scored after 12 games.
