Refwatch: Bjorn Kuipers to officiate Euro 2020 final

Netherlands match official Björn Kuipers will referee Sunday’s Euro 2020 final between Italy and England at Wembley Stadium.

The 48-year-old referee is set to be first Dutch official to take charge of a European Championship final. Kuipers was a member of the referees’ team at the last five Euros and World Cup Finals.

He was in charge of two Ireland European Championship play-offs - the 2-0 Euro 2016 play-off victory for the Boys in Green in Dublin against Bosnia & Herzegovina and the 1-1 home draw against Estonia for Euro 2012. He officiated in Ireland’s 3-1 loss to Croatia at the subsequent Euros.

He has been an international ref since 2006 and has officiated at seven UEFA competition finals.

He took charge of the 2018 UEFA Europa League final between Olympique Marseille and Atlético Madrid; the Madrid 2014 UEFA Champions League final derby between Real and Atlético de Madrid; the 2013 UEFA Europa League final between Benfica and Chelsea; the 2011 UEFA Super Cup match between Barcelona and Porto along with a couple of under-age finals (the 2009 UEFA Under-21 European Championship final between Germany and England; and the 2006 European Under-17 Championship final between Czech Republic and Russia).

He was a founder of Dutch supermarket chain Jumbo who sponsor F1 Driver Max Verstappen and are the co-sponsor the Jumbo Visma cycling team containing Primoz Roglic and Wout Van Aaert.
