Boost for Ruaihdri Higgins as Derry sign Jamie McGonigle from Crusaders

Premier Division Derry City have unveiled the signing of Crusaders forward Jamie McGonigle for an undisclosed fee.

The 25-year-old joins the Candystripes after impressing with the Crues following a previous spell with Coleraine before that. He also joins Derry on a three-and-half-year deal.

“I’m delighted to get the deal done today and I know what type of player we’re getting,” City boss Ruaidhri Higgins said.

“He is local to the north west and his superb goal-scoring record speaks for itself.

“Jamie has scored goals wherever he has played including at Crusaders where he spent much of the time playing in wider positions.

“It’s a great piece of business for us and the fact that it’s another long-term contract shows that we remain committed to our plan.

“Jamie is a player that is really going to excite Derry City supporters and we can’t wait to get him started.”

McGonigle’s move to the Foylesiders comes shortly after Will Patching confirmed his loan with the club has ended.

The former Manchester City youth returns to Dundalk after enjoying an impressive loan at the Ryan McBride Brandywell Stadium.

Meanwhile, the club also confirmed that young trio Caolan McLaughlin, Evan McLaughlin and Brendan Barr have all penned new deals with the club.

“The board and myself have always been clear that developing our own players was a huge part of our long-term plan.

"Caolan, Evan and Brendan have worked really hard to get to this point and know that there is an awful lot more hard work ahead of them," Higgins added.

“The opportunity is there for all our young players and I would like to congratulate everyone involved at the club’s Academy.

"That’s now seven of our first team squad who have come through the Academy in the past two years which speaks volumes for the effort they’re putting in.”
