Watch: Delight for ex-Waterford and Cork City midfielder Gavan Holohan as Hartlepool clinch dramatic promotion to the Football League

Former Waterford and Cork City midfielder Gavan Holohan has won promotion to the English Football League with Hartlepool this afternoon.

The Kilkenny native - who has also played for Galway United and Drogheda United in the League of Ireland – was a starter for his side this afternoon’s playoff final in Bristol.

Holohan was taken off in the second minute of injury time – just three minutes before Torquay United grabbed a dramatic late equaliser.

Torquay keeper Lucas got his head on a looping free-kick into the penalty area – and finding the back of the net with it.

And despite his impressive saves in a dramatic penalty shootout, he was unable to inspire his side to victory, with Holohan’s Hartlepool going up to League Two.

Since joining Hartlepool United in 2019, the 29-year-old midfielder has made almost 80 appearances for the club.

And most recently he was named as the National League’s Player of the Month for April.
