First Division Round-Up: Shels go 11 clear at the top as Bray and Galway secure wins

Shelbourne moved 11 points clear at the top of the First Division thanks to a 1-0 win over Wexford at Ferrycarrig Park on Friday evening.

Georgie Poynton’s 32nd minute spot-kick was the difference between the sides as Ian Ryan’s charges proved a stiff test for the Reds.

And Shels extended their lead at the top after UCD fell to a dismal 4-0 defeat away to Bray Wanderers.

The Students were largely second-best at the Carlisle Grounds – and they were duly punished as Conor Clifford and Darren Craven set them on their way to the three points.

Joe Doyle also came off the bench to score twice to pile the misery on UCD who sunk to their third defeat in a row.

Galway United also secured a big win in terms of their promotion aspirations as they saw off Cabinteely by a goal to nil at Eamonn Deacy Park.

The Tribesmen were deserving winners on Corribside and won the game by virtue of Wilson Waweru’s first-half strike.

Elsewhere, Cork City ran out 2-0 winners over Athlone Town at Lissywoolen. Goals from Alec Byrne and Jack Baxter sealed the three points for the Leesiders.
