Finn Harps diehard Jason Quigley took a major step in his quest to fight for a world title as he beat Shane Mosley, Jr with a majority decision in Las Vegas on Saturday.

The Ballybofey boxer picked up the vacant North American Boxing Association (NABO) middleweight title as he was taken all the way by the hometown fighter in Mandalay Bay.

30-year-old Quigley, who held the WBC-NABF until his one and only defeat to Tureano Johnson in 2019, recovered from a slow start to dominate the second half of the fight.

The fight had been rescheduled from February after Mosley suffered an illness, while a planned bout was cancelled in January after Sergey Kovalev’s failed drug test resulted in the card being cancelled.

And Quigley, who is a regular at Finn Park when on home soil, was good value for his win as he changed up his normal power-punching style to adopt a more fleet-footed strategy.

Mosley, Jr, the son of legendary former champions Shane 'Sugar' Mosley, was the underdog going into the fight but had been on a rich vein of form with four consecutive wins.

The American had the better of the early rounds but Quigley’s conservative style yielded dividends as the fight went on and his fitness allowed him to land more power shots as the fight progressed.

One of the judges’ scorecards had a95-95 draw for the ten-round fight, but two judges scored the fight 96-94 and 97-93 respectively in favour of Quigley.

The Irishman, who had former world champion Wayne McCullough in his corner as Andy Lee was unable to travel, called out WBO champion Demetrius ‘Boo Boo’ Andre after the fight.

In the co-main event on the same card, Chantelle Cameron stopped Michelle Hernandez in the fifth as she hopes to line up a shot at undisputed world champion Katie Taylor of Ireland.
