Drogheda United have moved up to fourth place in the Premier Division as they stretched their unbeaten run to their last five outings – including three wins.

A draw looked most likely on the cards at Finn Park on Friday night but after a fast and furious final 10 minutes, Dane Massey netted a fine free kick to take all three points for his side.

The former Dundalk man fired home with the last kick of the game – his fourth goal of the season - and noted that “realistically” the game should have ended in a draw.

“There was nothing in it really.” he told extratime.com afterwards. “We got out of here and it should have been a draw but look we’ll take the win all day.”

Speaking on the incidents prior to his goal, such as Harps’ claims for a penalty and the two red cards (for Harps captain Dave Webster and Drogs midfielder Luke Heeney), Massey noted it was a manic end to the game.

“The last 10 to 15 minutes, it was a bit hectic for the referee (Derek Tomney). The two sending offs I felt were both harsh and with their penalty claim I think their lad just got tangled up in our lad.”

The sending off of the Harps skipper resulted in the free kick which Massey scored from – it was back-to-back free kicks having scored from a set piece in the 3-1 win over St. Patrick’s Athletic last week.

The 33-year old was grateful to put his recent practice to good use.

“Lyons forced the foul and luckily enough I was able to finish it. I’ve been hitting them well the last couple of weeks, myself and Ronan Murray do them every week (in training).”

Drogheda currently sit fourth in the table – which, depending on the FAI Cup winner, could be good enough to qualify for Europe, but Massey noted that they can’t get carried away at this stage.

“We have a great changing room here, all we do is set weekly targets, that’s all we can do.

Take it game by game, enjoy it and the confidence is high in the club.

“Tim (Clancy) and Kevin(Doherty) have us playing confident football and it is great to be a part of,” he concluded.
