First Division Round-Up: Shels go five clear of UCD while Galway clinch late point on Leeside

Ian Morris’ Shelbourne moved five points clear at the top of the First Division on Friday evening as they saw UCD with a 3-1 scoreline at Tolka Park.

The Students were punished with some lax defending at set-piece scenarios – with each of Shels’ goals coming from set-piece routines.

Ryan Brennan scored twice after John Ross Wilson had given Shels a lead in the 22nd minute. Harvey O’Brien scored for UCD – although it ended up being a mere consolation for Andy Myler’s side.

Galway United also struck late yet again – this time to clinch a point – away to Cork City at Turner’s Cross.

Maurice Nugent’s late leveller cancelled out Jack Baxter’s opener for City – with the Preston loanee smashing home with a thunderous strike.

Cabinteely got back to winning ways as they saw off Treaty United at Stradbrook Road by two goals to one.

Cabo took the lead through Kieran Marty Waters in the first-half, but they were pegged back by Tommy Barrett’s side in the 48th minute as Sean McSweeney equalised.

But Vilius Labutis would get his name on the scoresheet in the 50th minute to score what would prove to be the winner two minutes later, leaving Cabo just a point behind second placed UCD.

Athlone Town came from behind to see off Cobh Ramblers at Lissywoolen last night – with James Doona and Derek Daly netting for Adrian Carberry’s side.

Doona’s winner meant the three points went to the Co. Westmeath outfit, after Killian Cooper had given Stuart Ashton’s side a 1-0 lead.

Meanwhile, Bray Wanderers eeked out a 1-0 win away to Wexford at Ferrycarrig Park.

Joe Doyle’s 44th minute strike proved to be the difference between the teams as Ian Ryan could not inspire a win for his winless side in his first game as manager.
