Waterford appoint Marc Bircham as first-team boss

Premier Division side Waterford have appointed former QPR player Marc Bircham as the club’s new first-team boss.

Bircham takes over from Mike Geoghegan who was manager on an interim basis following the departure of Kevin Sheedy last week.

But Geoghegan would only manage the club’s under-19 side against Drogheda United after a number of close contacts were identified in their first-team squad.

The Londoner will address the side via Zoom for the next two weeks in line with Covid-19 protocols.

The club are hopeful that he should be able to take to training next week and be in the dugout ahead of their home tie against Derry City.

Bircham played for QPR in the UK, and also lined out for Millwall during his playing career.

Following his retirement, Bircham was a youth coach at QPR, before then getting appointed as assistant manager at MLS side Chicago Fire.

He was most recently working with the Bahamas FA as Technical Director. This will be the 42-year-old's first senior management job.
