Ex-Cabinteely player Karl Byrne joins Blyth Spartans

Former Cabinteely full-back Karl Byrne has made the move to English non-league side Blyth Spartans.

The 24-year-old was due to sign with Blyth Spartans in February – although that was put on hold after the National League North season was declared null and void.

Hailing from Dublin, Byrne played in the League of Ireland for Cabinteely during a four-year period.

After his spell at Stradbrook, the Dubliner made a move cross channel, initially joining Burton Albion to train.

Stints at Frickley Athletic and Boston United would follow before his latest move to Blyth.

Blyth have also had former League of Ireland names in their squad in recent years – with current Cork City winger Dylan McGlade being one of the more notable names.

“I’m delighted to be here,” Byrne said after signing. “I’m really happy the manager has decided to take a chance on me.

“I’m just looking forward to the season ahead of doing the business.”

And his new manager at the club Michael Nelson added: “He impressed straight away but unfortunately didn’t get a chance to play in any games.

“He is full of energy and enthusiasm and can cover right back and centre midfield so gives us options.”
