Galway were out of sight early on in their game against Treaty United on Saturday afternoon when they scored four goals in the space of seven minutes to secure a 4-1 win in the Women’s National League.

Coach, Maz Sweeney was pleased with Galway’s performance and a return to winning ways after defeat to DLR Waves last weekend.

“We had an excellent start to the game, I think we were 4-0 up after 25 minutes, so you couldn’t have asked for a better start than that,” Sweeney said, speaking to the press after Saturday’s game.

“We probably did drop our standards slightly in the second half then and were unfortunate to concede a goal so we’re disappointed with that.

“We made a lot of changes and got a lot of players on to the park, moving people around and stuff but still we did, we dropped out standards in the second half and it’s something we’ll look at during the week in training.

“It’s three points and we’ll move on now to next week and Wexford which will be a big test.”

Although the result is very positive for the Tribeswomen, there was a worrying moment for Galway when top scorer Rachel Kearns appeared to go off injured at half-time.

The Mayo native has scored six goals and has gotten her name amongst the goals in each of Galway’s four games so far this season.

“Her ankle has been a bit weak lately, she had picked up a knock on it a couple of weeks ago, it’s just weak,” Sweeney explained.

“I think she went to block a ball and the impact of the ball was a concern so we said we’d take her out a half-time.

“Rachel’s on the score sheet and she’s scored in every game, I know she was due to go into home based training with the Irish senior team this Wednesday coming so we’ll have to see how her ankle is but please god she’ll be back in the following time there after that.

“She’s been excellent since she came in, to be sitting top goal scorer after three games, she’s done excellent for us.”

The Tribeswomen are set to face Wexford Youths next weekend in the WNL which will be a tough challenge for the Galway Girls and Sweeney is very aware of just how difficult it could be.

“We’re going to Wexford and that’s always a very difficult place to go, but we’re confident and the girls are growing in confidence all the time and they’re doing the right things.

“They’re trying what we’re asking them and just because it’s not coming off every single time we want them to keep trying it.”
