Former Ireland under-21 Danny Kane signs new deal with Sligo Rovers

Former Republic of Ireland under-21 defender Danny Kane has signed a one-year contract extension at Sligo Rovers to keep him at the club for the 2021 season.

The 23-year-old former Cherry Orchard and Lakelands schoolboy joined the Bit O’Red in 2019 and is now heading into his third year at the club.

Kane is a former Huddersfield Town academy player and has also played for Cork City in the League of Ireland.

“I’m very happy to sign,” Kane said on re-signing. “It’s been a different type of pre-season for me and it was leading towards being part of the squad for the first weekend.

“It’s the strongest group we’ve had in my time here. There’s a mix of senior players, some in the middle of their career and young players as well. It’s a very good balance.

“Pre-season went well for me and I’m ready. Obviously it’s been a frustrating time for me and I just want to play now and help the team have an even better season that last year.”

Manager Liam Buckley added: “I’m delighted to add Danny to the squad today. He has done very well in pre-season and he has earned this new contract.

“He made a contribution in the shortened season last year and in 2019 as well.

“Again he brings versatility to the group which we need and we have utilised that in the pre-season matches. He’s played in a couple of different positions in the games.  He’s a quality player and he will be registered in time for the weekend.

“We did feel it was important to add one more defender to the group, and Danny is a great player to bring in.”
