Atletico Madrid’s penalty woes proved their undoing once more as they failed to overturn a 2-0 first-leg deficit to Chelsea in their Champions League last 16 tie.

The Spanish club missed two penalties in the first leg in London last week and it was third time unlucky as Toni Duggan saw her spot-kick crash back off the bar in Monza.

Maren Mjelde made no mistake from 12 yards 13 minutes from time to leave last season’s quarter-finalists needing four but, though Emelyne Laurent netted in injury time, Chelsea progressed 3-1 on aggregate.

There were simple wins for defending champions Olympique Lyonnais, Wolfsburg, Barcelona, Bayern Munchen and Rosengard as they joined Chelsea in the quarter-finals.

Sweden’s Rosengard travelled to Austria with work to do after being held to a 2-2 draw by St Polten on home soil last week.

First-half goals from Emma Berglund and Mimmi Larsson cancelled out the hosts’ two away goals and they saw the game out to book their place in the last eight.

Lyon won 3-1 away to Denmark’s Brondby, to complete a 5-1 aggregate win, despite falling behind to an early Nanna Christiansen strike.

Goals from Nikita Parris and Melvine Malard saw Lyon lead at the break before a penalty from Wendie Renard wrapped up the win early in the second half.

Wolfsburg also took a 2-0 lead into their tie at Norwegian champions LSK Kvinner, and an own goal from Ina Gausdal and Ingrid Syrstad Engen’s strike saw them to a 4-0 aggregate in.

A 5-0 win for Barcelona at Fortuna Hjorring saw the Spanish champions run out 9-0 aggregate winners.

Aitana Bonmati scored either side of half-time before a penalty from Mariona and late strikes from Asisat Oshoala and Marta Torrejon rounded off a comfortable win.

Bayern rounded off a 9-1 aggregate win over BIIK-Kazygurt of Kazakhstan with 3-0 win in Munich, thanks to Lina Magull’s penalty and one each from Simone Boye Sorensen and Sidney Lohmann.

Ireland's Louise Quinn will be part of the Fiorentina side looking to overcome a 2-0 first-leg deficit as they welcome Manchester City on Thursday afternoon.
