Inaki Williams scored a stunning extra-time winner as Athletic Bilbao saw off Barcelona in the Supercopa final, while Lionel Messi saw red for the first time in his Barca career.

Striker Williams curled a magnificent effort past Marc Andre ter Stegen late in the first half of extra time as the Basque won out by the odd goal in five.

Messi then saw red for hitting out at Isier Villalibre in the dying minutes as Bilbao held out for their first Supercopa win in six years.

Antoine Griezmann had twice fired the Catalans in front but goals from Oscar de Marcos and substitute Villalibre, in second-half injury time, forced extra time.

Barcelona, who beat the Basques 3-2 in the league a week earlier, took the lead four minutes before half time when Frenchman Griezmann finished from a Jordi Alba cross.

Within a minute, however, Athletic were level as Williams found de Marcos with a wonderfully-weighted ball and the full back found the target.

Bilbao saw what they thought was a legitimate goal ruled out by VAR when Raul Garcia’s header was judged offside, and Barca retook the lead with 13 minutes remaining.

Alba was again the provider, playing a neat one-two with Ousmane Dembélé before squaring for Griezmann to guide the ball home.

That wasn’t to be the winner, however, as Iker Muniaín sent in a pinpoint ball for Villalibre to smash home the leveller in the final minute.

And the Basque side led for the first time on the night within three minutes of extra time as Muniaín fed Williams, who cuts inside before curling an outstanding shot into the corner.

Griezmann missed a glorious chance to level, and seal his hat-trick, before Messi was shown a straight red for an ill-judged slap on Villalibre in the final minute.

""Without doubt it's the best goal of my career," Willliams said at the final whistle.

"We believed in ourselves and showed heart and courage.

"This is for Gaizka Garitano and his coaching staff as well who brought us here."
