Dundalk have agreed a deal to sign defender Sonni Ragnar Nattestad from Faroese club B36 Torshavn.

The 26-year-old has won 31 caps for the Faroe Islands.

The 6ft 6in central defender will be reacquainted with two current Dundalk players having lined out against Sean Murray in a UEFA U21 qualifier in 2013 and, most recently, Raivis Jurkovskis in a UEFA Nations League game against Latvia.

Nattestad began his career with Faroese side 07 Vestur, making his debut as a 17-year-old.

The former Midtylland defender has come up against Dundalk before, in 2016 he lined out against them in a UEFA Champions League first qualifying round tie for Icelandic side FH Hafnarfjordur.

The Faroese international has taken in further spells at AC Horsens in Denmark and Molde in Norway who were managed by Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Nattestad made 22 starts for Torshavn helping them to a fourth place finish in the Meistaradeildin.

“Sonni is a national team player with international experience” Lilywhites first team coach Filippo Giovagnoli told the club’s media.

“He’s really big, strong and physical. He is six foot six, left footed, fast and good on the ball so he is exactly the kind of centre back we were looking for” he added.
