Dundalk have announced the signing of Italian-born Albanian keeper Alessio Abibi ahead of the 2021 season.

The FAI cup holders have been on the lookout for a new number one after Gary Rogers’ retirement and Aaron McCarey’s transfer to Cliftonville.

“Alessio was one of the goalkeepers that I studied and scouted and, of them all, he was the one with the best characteristics of how we want to play,” said manager Filippo Giovagnoli.

“He is also young, only 24, and is a player that we can develop. He has a brilliant future ahead of him.”

Abibi started his career at Gavorrano and made his Serie D debut as a 17-year-old. He then had a spell in Spain with Segunda Division B side Eldense in 2017 before moving to KF Tirana in Albania.

During his time with the Tirana club, he managed to win promotion to the top tier, the Albanian Cup and the Super Cup in just two seasons.

The 24-year-old joins the Lilywhites after a short spell in Albania with KS Kastrioti at the end of last season.
