Wexford goalkeeper Tom Murphy has re-signed with the club for the forthcoming League of Ireland season following an impressive first season at Ferrycarrig Park.

Murphy was named Wexford player of the year for last season’s campaign in the First Division and the former Everton academy shot stopper is now looking forward to pushing on with his club for 2021.

"I wanted to come back and spoke with Brian, personally I've really enjoyed the year," Murphy told the club's website.

"I've obviously been at a few clubs over the last few years but this was the year that even despite results I came out each week and enjoyed playing for Wexford and enjoyed when we did have the fans here the buzz around the ground.

"It's a club that has great people involved with it and hopefully next year we can show that to everybody. As we've seen over the last few years, the First Division has gotten more competitive and it's only going to get stronger. Next year you have the likes of Shelbourne and Cork coming down and strengthening, Galway going fully time, it's going to be an interesting year."

Wexford FC manager Brian O'Sullivan was keen to re-sign Murphy for the 2021 League of Ireland season.

"Tom's a good lad first and foremost, a good character to have in the dressing room, good trainer well disciplined, we're lucky to have him," O'Sullivan told the club's website.

"He was a little bit overworked at times, we probably could have helped him out a little bit better with better defending at times but he did well.

"He's also involved with the underage set up at Wexford as a goalkeeping coach which speaks volumes for him. Going into next year we just want to build on and improve from last year, we're looking to get most of the squad from this year back together and we have a couple of good young players coming through."
