Wexford FC goalkeeper Tom Murphy is contributing towards a very worthy cause during the League of Ireland off season. From November 25th to December 25th, Murphy will run 10km every day to raise money for the Irish Cancer Society, a charity very close to his heart.

Tom Murphy spoke to Extratime.com reporter Tom Byrne about his run for charity, which he hopes will raise funds for the Irish Cancer Society.

“I’ve always wanted to do something for charity and after seeing the support other charity fundraisers got this year, I said that I’d set my own up,” said Murphy, who will run 10km each day up until Christmas Day.

“I have seen people doing other fundraisers and I thought, what could I do that would be a bit different?  I’m actually a fan of long distance running too,” he continued.

“This year two of our family friends sadly passed away due to cancer so I thought I would do something that would go towards benefiting cancer research.”

During the pandemic, many sports people have supported their chosen charities through different fundraisers.

Murphy emphasised that “the football and sporting community is great in times of need. Everyone comes together to help causes and we have seen this throughout 2020 especially. Personally I just wanted to do what I could to help out the Irish Cancer Society. The charity would have missed out on many of their fundraisers this year due to the restrictions.”

The Wexford FC shot-stopper aims to kick on for 2021. “Hopefully with this fundraiser we can end what’s been a tough year on a high and aid a cause that could change lives. I am hopeful that it will lead to good things in the New Year!”

Murphy is grateful for any donations, big or small, to help his chosen charity.
