Drogheda re-sign three more as preparations ramp up for 2021

Newly promoted Premier Division side Drogheda United have confirmed the re-signings of Luke Heeney, Hugh Douglas and Mark Hughes ahead of the 2021 season.

The Drogs trio all played a key role in their First Division title success last month.

Heeney re-signed Drogheda in 2020 and he played a pivotal role in United’s title run-in.

The 21-year-old finished the season with 9 appearances and scored Drogheda’s second goal against Cabinteely on the final day of the season to seal the league win and promotion back to the top-flight.

“Signing back was a no brainer for me. Playing for my local side in the Premier is something I’m really looking forward to. I also really enjoyed playing under Tim and Kev the last two seasons,” Heeney told his club’s media team.

Also re-signing is talismanic central defender Hugh Douglas who is now heading into his second year at the United Park outfit.

“The players and management worked so hard to achieve our goal of promotion last season, so it was an easy decision to sign back as we all have the opportunity to test ourselves in the Premier Division against the best teams in the country,” Douglas said after signing back for another year at the club.

And also signing back is midfielder Mark Hughes. Hughes has been a part of the furniture at Drogheda under Tim Clancy and he is pleased to be able to extend his stay at the club.

“It’s a no brainer to sign back. It's a young exciting attacking team Tim and Kev have built the last few years.

“It's brilliant to play for them, they give players confidence to go and express themselves. They have a very modern approach to the game and I'm excited to see how we fare next year.

“The aims I think for any newly promoted team is to solidify themselves in the league. A good start would obviously be important to build momentum.

“Personally, my aims are to play as many games as I can, stay fit and injury free and help the team as much as I can.”
