Galway reach First Division playoffs at Cabinteely's expense after Wexford win arbitration hearing

Galway United have been placed into the First Division playoffs after Wexford won their arbitration hearing against a points deduction.

As a result, the Wexford vs Cabinteely game that ended scoreless in August, which was then overturned to a 3-0 win for Cabo, has been reversed back to its original result.

A statement from the FAI read: “The Football Association of Ireland has today been informed of the decision of the Independent Arbitrator to uphold the appeal of Wexford FC regarding the eligibility of a Wexford FC player.

“The Independent Arbitrator has ruled that the results on the field of play in the four games involving the player in question stand.

“Wexford FC and their opponents will now retain the points gained on the field of play from their First Division fixtures against Athlone Town, Cabinteely FC, Shamrock Rovers II and Cobh Ramblers.”

It emerged two weeks ago that the Slaneysiders were found guilty of fielding an ineligible player in four league games.

Wexford said that they were ‘astounded’ at the judgement made at the time and insisted that they would go to arbitration on the matter.

The guilty verdict has since been overturned by an independent arbitrator, and Galway United have now been instated into 5th place – a spot that Cabinteely occupied after Tuesday night.

Pat Devlin’s charges have since seen their points total of 28 drop back to 26. Galway, who finished on 27 points, will now take their place.

John Caulfield’s side are now due to face Bray Wanderers on Saturday, October 31st in the First Division promotion playoff semi-final.
