UCD boss Andy Myler pleased as UCD secure back to back wins after recent defeats

UCD boss Andy Myler admits he was pleased that his side brought an end to their three-game losing run at home against Cabinteely on Friday evening.

The Students blew Cabo away during a dominant second-half display that yielded five goals for Myler’s promotion contenders.

And after the disappointment of recent losses – especially at home – the recently appointed UCD boss was pleased that his side learned from the lessons of previous defeats.

“Tonight, we were good defensively, with the lads putting their bodies in front of the ball,” Myler told extratime.com.

“I was quite pleased with how we defended set-pieces in the last few weeks and how we went about it because we’ll always have a goal in us.

“You’ll always fancy the boys up top to score. I’m really pleased with the last two weeks.

“We built on the frustration I had for sure and we hope we can stay like that for the rest of the year by being better defensively because we’ll always have that attacking threat.”

In their win over Cabinteely, UCD brought their goal tally up to an incredible 42 league goals for the season – with striking duo Yoyo Mahdy and Colm Whelan scoring 29 of them thus far.

“There’s a good competition between the two of them now – once they keep passing to each other, that’s the only thing I’m worried about (laughs),” Myler added.

“They’re pushing each other, and you see it in training. They’re really at it and that’s shown up on the pitch on a Friday night. Long may it continue and it’s really pleasing to see.”

This is of course Whelan’s first year in senior League of Ireland football after the ex-Waterford underage striker joined UCD at the beginning of the 2020 campaign.

“If you didn’t know League of Ireland football, you wouldn’t think that this is (Colm’s) first year in senior football,” the UCD boss said.

And with 14 league goals to his name already this season, Myler believes that the 20-year-old has a big future ahead of him.

“He can go a hell of a way,” he added. “He can finish, has a turn of pace and he’ll get better. His hold-up play will get better. His other bits that come with senior football will get better.

“He’s got a hell of a chance as far as I’m concerned once he stays fit and at it. He’s got a great attitude and is a lovely kid so I can see big things for his future.

“He’s down to earth, he doesn’t get carried away and is quite quiet. He’ll knuckle down when he has to do his work and he has Yoyo there to push him all the time. It’s really pleasing.”
