Northern Ireland midfielder named Liverpool Women's player of the month

Northern Ireland International midfielder Rachel Furness has been named as Liverpool Women's Standard Chartered Player of the Month for September.

Furness was named vice captain of the Reds in August and has started the FA Women's Championship season on top form as she scored four times during the month.

It was a successful September for Furness who also helped Northern Ireland win 6-0 in the Faroe Island's in Euro 2022 qualifying as she scored the first goal of the game in Torshavn.

Liverpool have started the season with three wins and a draw as they sit top of the table with ten points from their four games.

Furness opened the scoring in the Reds opening day draw with Durham at Prenton Park and has gone on to score a brace against Charlton Athletic in a 4-0 victory and another goal in their 3-0 win away at London Bee's.

The combative midfielder who can also play as a false 9 told Liverpoolfc.com: “It’s always really nice to be recognised by the fans, it’s just a shame they weren’t able to be in the stadium with us to enjoy the goals."

"I wouldn’t say I expected to be scoring, I just want to be part of the team and help them get the three points.”

"I’m not sure what goal was my favourite but it would maybe the left-foot effort against Charlton."

"It was at a time in the game where it really pushed us on and I beat a couple of players, which I don’t normally do".

Furness and her teammates will be up against Women's Super League opponents on Wednesday afternoon as they take on Manchester United in the Continetal Cup and on that game she said "We’re up for the challenge. We want to play against the best teams and Manchester United have proved they are one of those in the last couple of years and then we have another tough game on Sunday against Leicester City".

Furness will certainly be catching the eye of Northern Ireland boss Kenny Shiels ahead of their crucial Euro 2022 qualifier away against
Belarus on Tuesday October 27.
