Andy Myler rues 'frustrating' night as UCD fall to defeat at home to Bray

Andrew Dempsey reports from the UCD Bowl

UCD boss Andy Myler admits that he was left frustrated following the Students costly 3-1 defeat at home to Bray Wanderers on Friday evening.

Myler’s side started poorly in both halves on Friday night, but it was their start to the second-half of the game that cost them dearly.

“It’s a very frustrating night for us again to be honest,” Myler told extratime.com following his side’s defeat.

After going in level at the break thanks to Colm Whelan’s equaliser, UCD were undone in the second-half with goals from both Darragh Lynch and Dylan Barnett seeing Bray ease to their latest win.

“We played some good stuff at times tonight, but I’m just lost for words after that one because we’re not learning,” he added.

“It wasn’t hard to cope with (Bray’s start) but it’s just frustrating because we said that we couldn’t give them a start in both halves, and we let them start in both halves.

“You can say we played well but it doesn’t feel like that, the result was just a killer.”

The result now leaves UCD at risk of missing out on the playoff positions, and Myler insists that he is wary of that threat.

“I think a lot of teams could still miss out on the playoffs at this stage,” he said. “I think Drogheda and Bray are the only side’s safe in that way but any three from the other five are certainly still in the mix.

“We’re not out of the hunt and we’re still looking to finish as high up the table as we can. We need to pick ourselves up now.

“We’ve got three games left but we need to be better than tonight and learn from giving away sloppy goals.

“As much as we have goal in the team in an attacking sense but we give away far too many goals and sloppy ones.

“It’s not really to do with our shape but it is to do with individual errors and we need to cut that out.”

But despite his evident frustration with the result and performance, Myler did take positives from his side’s general play.

“Lots of our play was good tonight, and that’s what you want to see,” he finished. “The effort was there, but there’s never a lack of effort on our part.

“We try to play as much as we can, that’s still there, but what’s killing us is the level of naivety we have.

“I don’t mind that with a young team, it will happen, but you don’t like to see the same mistake repeated once twice or three times.”
