Had Boots Did Travel: The Irish Abroad (September 25-28, 2020)

Republic of Ireland’s international forward Callum Robinson was on target twice as West Brom secured a point against Chelsea in the pick of the Irish efforts abroad this weekend.

Conor Hourihane was also on target as Aston Villa eased to a comfortable 3-0 win away to Fulham at Craven Cottage.

Former Cork City winger Kieran Sadlier opened the scoring in the 87th minute for Rotherham United who eventually drew away to Birmingham City.

Former St Kevin’s Boys schoolboy Ryan Cassidy scored from the spot as Accrington Stanley lost 4-1 at home to Oxford United.

Elsewhere, Sean Roughan continued his impressive league form for Lincoln City with a start, as Anthony Scully came off the bench, in their 2-0 win over Charlton Athletic.

Meanwhile, former Longford Town man Dean Ebbe scored as Caernarfon Town fell to a 4-0 defeat against TNS.

Premier League

Everton skipper Seamus Coleman scored an assist in their two-one win over Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park – with James McCarthy playing for the Eagles on Saturday afternoon.

Dundalk’s Jimmy Dunne and Cork’s Kevin Long partnered each other in defence as Burnley lost at home Southampton.

Shane Long, Will Smallbone and Michael Obafemi were left on the bench for the Saints – with the latter coming on as a second-half sub.

David McGoldrick and Enda Stevens both started as Sheffield United continued their poor start to the Premier League season with a 1-0 loss at home to Leeds United.

Meanwhile, Jeff Hendrick and Matt Doherty both took on one another as Newcastle United secured a late 1-1 draw with Tottenham Hotspur.

Elsewhere, Darren Randolph was left on the bench as West Ham secured a big 4-0 win at home against Wolves.



Women’s FA Cup & Championship

Hayley Nolan played as London City Lionesses lost to Durham while one-time capped Irish international Cherelle Khassal was on target as Crystal Palace lost 3-2 at home to Blackburn.

Republic of Ireland under-19 internationals Phoebe Warner and Megan Mackey squared off against one another as Lewes defeated Coventry United by a goal to nil.

Niamh Fahey played as Liverpool defeated Charlton Athletic 4-0, while Denise O’Sullivan netted in normal time as Brighton eventually lost on penalties versus Birmingham City.

Championship

Republic of Ireland senior international duo Cyrus Christie and Harry Arter both played in Nottingham Forest’s one-nil defeat away to Huddersfield Town.

Former Derry City winger James McClean started in Stoke City’s 1-0 away win over Preston North End as both Alan Browne and Seanie Maguire featured for North End.

Conor Masterson was left on the bench in Queens Park Rangers’ 1-1 draw at home to Middlesbrough, while Greg Cunningham played in Cardiff City’s 2-1 loss at home to Reading.

Ireland international forward Adam Idah was brought on as a late sub in Norwich City’s one-nil loss away to Bournemouth – with Mark Travers left on the bench for the Cherries.

Richard Keogh made his first start for MK Dons, while Joe Mason and Warren O’Hora started as they lost away to Crewe Alexandra.

Jack Bonham scored a clean sheet as Gillingham defeated Blackpool 2-0, while former Ireland under-21 Niall Canavan played in Plymouth’s 1-1 draw against Shrewsbury Town.

Rochdale’s Irish contingent of Gavin Bazunu, Jimmy Keohane, Paul McShane and Eoghan O’Connell lost 2-0 away to an Ipswich Town side that included Stephen Ward.

Celbridge native Cian Bolger and former Ireland under-21 defender Michael Harriman both featured in Northampton Town’s 2-0 loss against Hull City who left Sean McLoughlin on the bench.

Elsewhere, Ireland under-21 Jack Taylor played for Peterborough United in their 1-0 loss against Sunderland who brought in Aiden O’Brien off the bench.

League Two

Former Shamrock Rovers and Sligo Rovers forward Eoin Doyle once again failed to get on the scoresheet as Bolton Wanderers lost 2-0 at home to Newport County.

Former Cork City defender Ryan Delaney was left on the bench for the Trotters while Padraig Amond also featured in a big win for Newport.

Cork’s Billy Clarke grabbed an important assist as Bradford City won 2-1 at home against Stevenage while Ian Lawlor conceded three as Oldham lost 3-2 against Crawley Town.

Joe Murphy was left on the bench as Tranmere Rovers drew 0-0 with Cambridge United. Tranmere handed a start to Lee O’Connor and Cambridge did so to Wes Hoolahan.

Harry Charsely and Conor O’Keefe both started for Mansfield Town as they lost 2-1 at home to Exeter City. Stephen McLaughlin and Aaron O’Driscoll were left on the bench for Mansfield in their defeat.

Meanwhile, John O’Sullivan and Liam McAlinden both started as Morecambe bounced back from their 7-0 defeat at home to Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup with a 2-1 win away to Southend United.

Scottish Premiership

Gary Dicker, Danny Rogers and Alan Power all started as Kilmarnock defeated St Mirren one-nil away from home.

St Mirren handed starts to Jamie McGrath, Conor McCarthy and Joe Shaughnessy in their defeat while Colin Doyle and Dylan Connolly were left on the bench.

Shane Duffy also played as Celtic won 3-0 at home versus Hibernian, as former Waterford striker Michael O’Connor was left on the bench as Ross County lost 3-0 at home to Aberdeen.

Aberdeen saw both Jonny Hayes and Tommie Hoban both start in their win over County.

Rest of the World

Former Glasgow Celtic youngster Conor Henderson played as his Pirin Blagoevgrad defeated Neftohimik in the Bulgarian second tier by four goals to nil.

Cillian Sheridan was brought on as a substitute in Wisla Plock’s 3-1 loss at home to Warta Poznan, while Arron Molloy played for Portland Timbers in their USL Championship win over Tacoma Defiance 3-1.   

Jon Gallagher and Jake Mulraney both started in Atlanta United’s 2-0 loss at home to Chicago Fire.

Anselmo Garcia McNulty played as his Wolfsburg II side saw off Vfb Oldenburg one-nil, while former Republic of Ireland under-19 women’s international Lois Roche played as Roa lost two-nil away to Lillestrom in the Norwegian top-flight.   

Former Cork City full-back Steven Beattie came on as a second-half substitute in Chattanooga Red Wolves’ 1-0 defeat to Forward Madison in the USL League One.

Diane Caldwell’s SC Sand came out 1-0 winners over Claire O’Riordan’s MSV Duisburg while Kyra Carusa featured as Koge defeated AGF in the Danish top-flight.

Former Republic of Ireland under-21 Sean McDermott played as Kristiansund drew 1-1 with SK Brann, while Graham Carey was subbed off as CSKA Sofia lost to Lokomotiv Plovdiv.

Robert Kiernan and Corey Whelan both played as Phoenix Rising saw off SC Orange County in the USL Championship, while Arron Molloy played as Portland Timbers lost 2-1 to Tacoma Defiance on Sunday evening.

Dubliner Jordan Doherty featured as Tampa Bay Rowdies that defeated Miami FC, while Richie Ryan played as El Paso Locomotive drew 0-0 with New Mexico United.

Former Finn Harps man Niall Logue also played as his Tucson side lost 2-1 at home Fort Lauderdale.

Meanwhile, former Longford Town man Dean Ebbe scored as Caernarfon Town fell to a 4-0 defeat against TNS who also saw Tom Holland start. John Disney also played in Connah’s Quay Nomad’s win over Haverfordwest County.
