Europa League Round-Up: Coleraine suffer penalty heartache as Rovers are eventually undone by classy Milan

There was Europa League heartache for Irish League side Coleraine this evening as they crashed out at the expense of Motherwell via a penalty shootout.

The Bannsiders went in at the break two goals behind before they produced a stirring second half fightback to bring the game into extra-time.

Ben Doherty’s double was not added to in extra-time, and they were undone through the lottery of penalties with Northern Ireland shot-stopper Trevor Carson saving all three Coleraine spot-kicks.

Elsewhere, Shamrock Rovers bowed out of Europe after being seen off by a classy AC Milan at Tallaght Stadium.

The Hoops were undone by goals from Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Hakan Calhanoglu despite giving their Serie A opposition a real scare in Dublin 24.

Meanwhile, Dundalk saw off Andorrans Inter Club d’Escaldes by a goal to nil while Linfield crashed out at the hands of Maltese side Floriana by a goal to nil at Windsor Park.

Welsh outfit Connah’s Quay Nomads were defeated by Dinamo Tbilisi while Bala Town lost two-nil away to Belgian giants Standard Liege.

There was also a win away from home for Aberdeen, with Dubliner Jonny Hayes starting for the Dons against Viking as Rangers won five-nil away to Lincoln Red Imps.

Incredibly, Romanian giants FCSB also won a twelve goal thriller on penalties against Serbians Backa Topola.
