Teenager Ellen Molloy among nine home-based players in Ireland squad to face Germany

Republic of Ireland manager Vera Pauw has included nine home-based players as the Euro 2021 qualifying campaign resumes following a six-month break away to Germany next month.

Wexford Youths midfielder Ellen Molloy has been called up for the first time after impressing with James Scott’s under-17s.

The 16-year-old recently broke into the Youths senior team, scoring twice on her senior debut against Bohemians earlier this month.

Champions Peamount United are represented five times in the squad, with centurion Aine O’Gorman joined by Claire Walsh, Niamh Farrelly, Niamh Reid-Burke and Stephanie Roche.

Shelbourne trio Jamie Finn, Izzy Atkinson and Jessica Ziu complete the Women’s National League contingent for the crucial qualification double header.

Ireland face Germany for the first time in the group on September 19th in Essen, and will be based in Duisburg for the pre-match training camp.

There’s also a first call-up for American-born midfielder Alli Murphy, one of two London City Lionesses players in the squad alongside Hayley Nolan.

Manchester City full-back Megan Campbell and Charlton Athletic’s Chloe Mustaki have been omitted as they recover from ankle ligament and cruciate knee ligament injuries.

“It is great to be back preparing for international games again and to continue our goal of qualifying for the European Championships,” said Pauw.

“We will travel to Germany knowing that we will face a difficult opponent, but that is part of competing at this level/

“Germany are one of the best teams in world football and we’ve seen their club teams, particularly Wolfsburg, perform so well in the UEFA Women’s Champions League of late. So we know what to expect and we have to be ready to play our best game.

“With our players possibly coming from nine different countries, we remain mindful of the protocols in place to deal with COVID-19.

“It’s important that we adhere to all medical advice around this game. This pandemic is not yet over and we must work together to fight it.”
