UEFA Champions League Round-up: Celtic knocked out at home by Ferencvaros while Celje and Legia Warsaw also out

Scottish champions Celtic are out of the Champions League at the second hurdle following a shock 2-1 defeat at home to Hungarian side Ferencvaros.

Goals in either half from David Siger and Tokmac Nguen earned the visitors a deserved win, after Ryan Christie had equalised for Celtic early in the second period.

Ferencvaros manager Sergie Rebrov was bullish coming into the tie, boasting that his side had targeted a first-ever qualification for the group stages.

And his confidence appeared to be well-founded when they hit the front with just seven minutes on the clock, through midfielder Siger.

Celtic looked to have dealt with a Ferencvaros set-piece but Brazilian midfielder Somália picked out Siger and the Hungarian made no mistake from inside the box.

They took that lead into the break but were pegged back on 53 minutes when Mohamed Elyounoussi found Christie and he curled a shot high past Denes Dibusz.

Elyounoussi had a goal disallowed for offside and it was the visitors who scored the crucial goal as a long ball forward was controlled by Nguen, who squeezed his shot in from a narrow angle.

Elsewhere, Linfield’s conquerors Legia Warsaw were eliminated after falling to a 2-0 extra-time defeat to Cypriot champs Omonio Nicosia.

Jordi Gomez opened the scoring two minutes into extra time before Thiago secured the win early in the second half.

And Celje, who beat Dundalk 3-0 in the first round, conceded twice in the second half as Molde came from behind to book their spot in the third round.

Mitja Lotric had put the Slovenians in front, a lead they carried into the break, but goals from Etzaz Hussein and Leke James turned the tie for the Norwegians.

Dinamo Zagreb edged a dramatic penalty shoot-out 6-5 away to CFR Clug after their tie had finished 2-2 after extra time.

And there were wins for Young Boys, Maccabi Tel Aviv, Dynamo Brest, Qarabag and Red Star Belgrade, while Midtjylland saw off Ludogorets of Bulgaria.

In the league path, AZ beat Viktoria Plzen 3-1 after extra time, PAOK beat Besiktas 3-1 and Rapid Wien won 1-0 away to Croatia’s Lokomotiva Zagreb.
