Bayern Munich lift Champions League again as Kingsley Coman sinks boyhood club Paris Saint-Germain's dreams

Bayern Munchen have been crowned Champions League winners for the sixth time following a tight 1-0 triumph over Paris Saint-Germain at Estádio da Luz in Lisbon on Sunday night.

A header from PSG academy graduate Kingsley Coman just before the hour mark proved the difference between the sides as Bayern completed a league, domestic and European Cup treble.

The French side came into the game searching for their first-ever Champions League trophy and looking to become the first side to win at the first attempt since Borussia Dortmund in 1997.

They had appeared in European finals before, twice reaching the Cup Winners’ Cup in 1996 and 1997, beating Rapid Vienna to lift the trophy on the earlier occasion.

And they certainly didn’t appear in awe of the situation as both sides played open, expansive football from the outset and created a string of early chances.

The best of those fell to PSG, however, and how Kylian Mbappé will rue his miss close to half-time when, following David Alaba’s error, he scuffed a poor shot at Manuel Neuer from ten yards.

Neymar had already seen one low shot blocked by the totemic leg of the German keeper, while Angel Di Maria was wasteful with another opportunity he blasted over the bar.

It was Bayern who went closest, however, as the competition’s top scorer Robert Lewandowski saw his improvised effort rebound back off Keylor Navas’ post.

The Bavarians have been the competition’s outstanding side and, though they never looked likely to repeat their 8-2 semi-final filleting of Barcelona, they did begun to assume greater control after the break.

They hit the front on 59 minutes and it was with some irony that star-studded PSG, who fielded just one academy product in Presnel Kimpembe, were undone by one of their most successful graduates.

It was a goal of simple beauty and teamwork, with Thomas Muller laying off Serge Gnabry’s right-wing cross perfectly for Joshua Kimmich.

The right-back chipped an inch-perfect cross towards the back post, where Coman was waiting to plant an immaculate header back across Navas and into the corner of the net.

PSG wilted in the immediate aftermath of the goal and struggled to find their rhythm despite the welcome return of Marco Verratti from injury to replace Leandro Paredes.

The French champions had chances to force extra time as Bayern’s attacking philosophy ensured there was space for their quick forwards to exploit.

The best chance fell to Marquinhos, goalscoring hero in both the quarter and semi-finals, from a sublime Di Maria pass through the legs of Alphonso Davies, but once again Neuer stood tall.

Bayern endured a couple of hairy moments in injury time but the last opportunity vanished as Neymar’s cross just evaded Eric Choupo-Moting and the Germans were champions once more.
